At Home With Lexus


Make sure your Lexus is in good health as much as you are through these maintenance tips.


Start the vehicle and let it idle for at least 10 minutes. This will give the battery enough time to charge. If you shut off the engine too soon, this won’t allow the battery to reach an optimum charge level because cranking the starter motor uses a lot of juice. Switch the air-conditioner on to let the freon circulate, and to keep the gaskets and seals of the system lubricated.

While waiting for the engine to reach operating temperature, make sure that all of the interior lights are off. More important, be sure that your car is parked in an area with proper ventilation. If it is parked in a garage, the exhaust end should be facing outward. Never leave the garage door closed while the engine is idling. 

If you won’t drive your car for an even longer time, it would be wise to disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Modern cars have a ‘ghost’ drain even when switched off. Keeping the battery disconnected will prolong its charge.


Occasionally lift the wipers off from the glass to keep from dust and dirt from building up on the blades. A scratch-free micro-fiber duster is something that you can use to remove fine dust that has caked the windshield. Before driving off, don’t switch the wipers on unless you are sure that the blades and windshield are clean. If you don’t have micro-fiber dusters or towels handy, use generous amounts of clean water to wash away the dust.


If you can park in a covered area, do so. This will minimize the UV damage that your car has to endure. The interior will thank you for it. If you have no choice but to let your car brave nature and the elements, using a quality car cover is a good idea. If you don’t have one, monitor your car for bird droppings or tree sap. These can damage the paint finish and are best removed immediately with a small amount of water, car shampoo, and a micro-fiber towel. If you can’t be hassled with that, a quick detailer and micro-fiber towel will do.


Remove all flammable and under-pressure objects from inside of your car. Aerosol cans and lighters should be stored elsewhere. If you have a fire extinguisher, it’s okay to keep it inside of the car.


Move your car from its parking space at least once a week to keep the tires from developing flat spots. These flat spots aren’t pleasant when driving as the tires are no longer perfectly round. Use the brakes, too, to remove any rust buildup from the rotors.


Don’t leave any garbage or edible items in the car as this will attract rodents and pests. Also, be sure to leave the air-con system on ‘re-circulate’ so that small insects or animals cannot enter through any exterior air vents.

After the lockdown is over, don’t drive off just yet. Open the hood and check the fluid and oil levels. Make sure that no pets or neighborhood animals have made the engine bay a temporary home. Open the trunk to make sure everything you need, like your toolkit, is there. It’s also a good time to check the pressure of the spare tire. Take a look at the immediate surroundings of the vehicle to make sure there aren’t any obstructions that might have found their way under or around your car.
